Hungary Striker Barnabas Varga Stable in Hospital After Clash

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga is stable in hospital after suffering a fractured cheekbone in a mid-air collision with Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall during the two teams' Euro 2024 clash on Sunday.

Varga was stretchered off the field in the 25th minute of the match after the sickening clash and was taken to hospital for further treatment.

A statement from the Hungarian Football Federation said: "Barnabas Varga is stable in hospital after sustaining a fractured cheekbone in today's match against Scotland. He will remain in hospital for observation and further treatment."

Varga's injury is a major blow to Hungary, who are now without one of their key players for the rest of the tournament. The 28-year-old has been in excellent form for Hungary in recent months, scoring five goals in his last six appearances for the national team.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke said he was "devastated" for Varga after the match.

"It was a terrible clash of heads and I'm just relieved that Barnabas is stable in hospital," Clarke said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family at this time."

The match was eventually won by Scotland 3-1, but the victory was overshadowed by Varga's injury.
