What Aussie Flyers Need to Know About the New 'Pets in Cabins' Rules

Domestic and International Flights

Effective February 23, 2023, Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia have implemented new pet policies for domestic and international flights. These changes aim to enhance the safety and comfort of both pets and passengers.

Domestic Flights

On domestic flights within Australia, only cats and dogs are permitted as pets in the cabin. They must be at least 12 weeks old and fully vaccinated. The maximum weight limit, including the carrier, is 10kg (22lbs) for Qantas and Jetstar and 7kg (15lbs) for Virgin Australia.

Pets must be secured in an approved pet carrier beneath the seat in front of you. Carriers must be soft-sided and well-ventilated, with dimensions not exceeding 55cm x 38cm x 23cm (22in x 15in x 9in). A maximum of two pets per carrier is permitted.

Advance notice is required when booking a flight with a pet. Fees apply, ranging from $75 to $150 depending on the airline and route.

International Flights

For international flights, the pet policies vary depending on the destination country. Some countries have strict quarantine laws and may not permit pets to enter the cabin. It's essential to check with the airline and destination country's regulations before booking.

Generally, pets must be at least 8 weeks old and fully vaccinated. Health certificates and documentation may be required. Carriers must meet specific size and ventilation requirements, and fees apply.

Additional Rules and Regulations

Pregnant pets, pets with health conditions, or those that pose a potential threat are not permitted in the cabin. Service animals, such as guide dogs, are exempt from these regulations.

Passengers are responsible for ensuring their pets are comfortable, well-behaved, and do not disturb other passengers. Failure to comply with the pet policies may result in denied boarding or additional fees.
