Calgary avoids severe thunderstorms, but hail falls in the northwest

Environment Canada says more storms could be on the way

Hail falls in MacEwan Glen

Calgarians in the northwest community of MacEwan Glen were pelted with hail Monday evening, as Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the city.

The warning was issued around 6:30 p.m., and Environment Canada said that pea- to nickel-sized hail was possible.

There were no reports of damage from the hail.

Thunderstorms expected to continue

Environment Canada said that more thunderstorms are possible in Calgary on Tuesday.

The weather agency said that the storms could bring strong winds, heavy rain, and hail.

Calgarians are advised to be prepared for severe weather and to take shelter if a warning is issued.

Tips for staying safe during a thunderstorm

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.
  • If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle.
  • Avoid contact with metal objects, such as fences, plumbing, and appliances.
  • Do not swim or wade in water during a thunderstorm.
  • If you see a downed power line, stay away and call 911.
