Former Cycling Champion to Lead Australian Team

Meares Returns to Olympic Stage in New Role

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Anna Meares has been appointed as Australia's Chef de Mission for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The announcement was made by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) on March 1, 2024.

As Chef de Mission, Meares will be responsible for leading and managing the Australian team throughout the Games. Her duties will include ensuring the team's welfare and providing support and guidance to the athletes.

Meares is a highly decorated cyclist and is widely regarded as one of Australia's greatest Olympic athletes. She won gold medals in the individual sprint and team sprint events at the 2012 London Olympics and the individual sprint event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Since retiring from competitive cycling, Meares has remained involved in the sport as a commentator and ambassador. She is also a board member of the AOC and is passionate about promoting Olympic values and inspiring future generations of athletes.

AOC President John Coates said, "Anna Meares is an exceptional choice to lead our team in Paris. She is a true Olympic champion who embodies the values of the Olympic movement. We are confident that she will provide our athletes with the support and guidance they need to succeed on and off the field of play."

Meares said she was honored to be appointed as Chef de Mission and was eager to contribute to the success of the Australian team.

"I am thrilled to have this opportunity to represent my country and support our athletes in their pursuit of excellence," she said. "I am committed to creating a positive and supportive environment for our team and ensuring that they have the best possible experience in Paris."
