British Man Dies as Severe Turbulence Hits London to Singapore Flight

Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 Diverts to Bangkok After Medical Emergency

London, May 21, 2024 - A 73-year-old British man has died and dozens of people have been injured after a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore hit severe turbulence over Myanmar.

The incident occurred on Monday night as Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 was en route from London Heathrow Airport to Singapore Changi Airport. The plane departed London at 10:38 pm local time and was scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 6:30 am local time on Tuesday.

According to the airline, the pilot declared a medical emergency and diverted the plane to Bangkok after the sudden extreme turbulence over the Irrawaddy Basin at around 1:45 am local time.

The aviation tracking site FlightRadar24 said that based on its data, the turbulence occurred over Myanmar. The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER made an emergency landing at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport at 15:45 local time.

Singapore Airlines said that the injured passengers were receiving medical attention in Bangkok. The cause of the turbulence is still under investigation.

In a statement, the airline said: "Singapore Airlines extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased passenger. The airline is providing all necessary assistance to the affected passengers and their families."

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of air travel and the importance of following safety instructions.
